Region2 Assistant Superintendent Fabio Zuluaga introduces new principal Sherry Shin to the Mason Crest staff.

Dear Mason Crest Elementary School Parents, Students, and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Ms. Sherry Shin has been selected to serve as the Principal of Mason Crest Elementary School, effective July 2, 2018.

Most recently, Ms. Shin served as the assistant principal at Mason Crest, where she has had that position since 2015. Previously, she worked as an elementary English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) mathematics instructional support teacher in the Office of Language Acquisition and Title I. She has also served as a math resource teacher at Mount Eagle Elementary Schoo and as a classroom teacher at Bush Hill Elementary School.

Ms. Shin brings a wealth of experience in the implementation and evaluation of a Professional Learning Community as a framework to ensure all students reach their full potential. The Mason Crest Collaboration in the Core clearly has delineated the PLC work at Mason Crest; this is evidenced by Ms. Shin's desire to develop capacity for distributive leadership by providing staff members with leadership opportunities.  As a result of this strategic and systemic PLC work, Mason Crest was awarded the 2016 Rick DuFour National PLC Award while Ms. Shin was the assistant principal.  As collaboration is a key component to Ms. Shin’s leadership style, she understands that it is important to create a positive culture of collaboration, trust, and learning which will then ultimately lead to higher rates of engagement for students, staff, and the community.

Additionally Ms. Shin has extensive experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and English language learners. Ms. Shin has also been involved in the Cultural Proficiency Team for Fairfax County Public Schools, researching and training teams, administrators, content specialists, and other FCPS departmental staff in an effort to deepen the understanding and use of culturally responsive teaching practices.

Ms. Shin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master of Teaching degree, and a Master of Education degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia.  She received her leadership and administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia, as well.

Please join me in welcoming Sherry Shin as the new principal of Mason Crest Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Fabio Zuluaga

Assistant Superintendent, Region 2
